Acupuncture and East Asian medicine have been in use for over 2,000 years. One of the foundations of this medicine is the belief that each person, each living thing has “Qi” – a life energy.
The human body has more than 2,000 acupuncture points, connected by pathways or meridians. These pathways create an energy flow through the body that is responsible for overall health. Disruption of the energy flow can cause disease. The goal of an acupuncture appointment is to renew the healthy flow of qi and to restore the body to balance.
From the standpoint of Western medicine, acupuncture stimulates nerves both local to the immediate muscles, as well as spanning organs in the body, creating relief that spans the nervous system, muscles, and organs.
When toxins or cell wastes stagnate in the muscles or joints, the body struggles with their disposal, often resulting in discomfort or pain.
Cupping draws stagnant blood and other fluids up to the skin level and away from the injury, so that healthy circulation can be restored to the affected area. The pulling action of cupping facilitates the release of rigid soft tissues, stimulates the peripheral nervous system, loosens and lifts connective tissues, and breaks up and drains stagnation. It also increases blood and lymph flow to skin, muscles, and connective tissues.
Many chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, constipation, anxiety, fatigue, headaches, fibromyalgia, and neuralgia can be effectively treated with cupping. Traumatic injuries, stubborn orthopedic conditions, and lingering sports injuries can also be helped.
Cupping is a valuable adjunct treatment that compliments detoxification, weight loss, and skin tone improvement, all of which help you look and feel your best.
“Gua means ‘scrape’ and Sha means ‘petechiae’ (tiny, flat red, purple spots). The key point is to scrape the skin to invigorate blood flow, release heat-toxins, stimulate lymphatic drainage, activate various points of the body, and bring the body’s helpful natural chemicals to the area by stimulating an immune response.
It will create some temporary discoloration on the skin, which can look dramatic. But rest assured, there is no pain and the petechiae usually goes away within days.
Moxibustion is a technique that involves the burning of mugwort, known as moxa, which is an herb that facilitates healing. The purpose of moxibustion is to stimulate the flow of Qi, strengthen the blood and maintain general health.
Moxibustion can be used for many reasons because it provides many benefits. The first benefit of moxibustion is it is warming to the body. Many people who have autoimmune diseases, low immunity and blood conditions are frequently cold. The warming properties of moxa make it a great choice for these types of conditions.
Moxa is also a good choice for those suffering from aches and pains. The warming properties of moxa allow it to increase blood flow by warming the blood. Increased blood flow means increased oxygenation to the tissues, muscles and tendons that are sore.
Another benefit of utilizing moxibustion is increased immunity. Studies have shown moxibustion significantly increases the white blood cell count in the body, which is the major component of the immune system. Moxa strengthens the immune system and helps re-balance autoimmune diseases.
